Google Search Tips
Below are the main points from the tutorial.
The example search strings are all in bold
- Search for a phrase by enclosing in double quotes for example “Patrick Norton” or put a hyphen between the words like Patrick-Norton.
- Google will spell correct for you. It will suggest the correct spelling. If you did spell it correctly but google wants to correct it anyway put a + sign in front of the word that they are trying to correct.
- Google is capable of smart searching. The Google philosophy is that no matter what you put in the search box they will try to do something useful with it. You can track packages by searching by tracking number, check flights, find out who phone numbers belong to, use Google as a calculator and also convert currency.
- You can use Google as a dictionary by typing the string define: car and you will have a definition of the word car returned to you.
- You can search for file types on a certain subject. For example you want to find a power point presentation on the Cival War then you would search the string of cival war filetype:ppt. This works with most file types.
- You can use Google for price comparisons. Say you want to buy a dvd player between $100 to $300. you would search dvd players $100..$300 and you will have a list of dvd players that fall into that price range.
- You can search for Movies that are playing in local theaters. By typing the movie name then the zip code for example: transformers 63130
- You can do a site search to find something specific on a webpage, for example if you want to find video cards at dl.tv you would search video cards site:dl.tv.
Tip: You will get more results if you eliminate the www from the search string.
